About 2 months ago I made the decision to stop using my cell phone while driving. I never used it much, but I would always answer calls and often use the time in the car to make phone calls. But I realized that it was irresponsible to do it for two reasons.
I’m a worse driver when using my cell phone…so are you and so is everyone. I don’t care how good at it you (think you) are, how proficient of a texter, or blackberry user you are. There’s just no way that anyone can give their full attention to something as important as driving while also giving their attention to using the phone. I know there’s been times when I was using my phone that I came close to getting in an accident…it’s not worth it. A split second of not paying attention can have dramatic effects.
My other reason for not using it in the car? It’s unfair to the person I’m talking to. If I’m trying to be a safe driver and have a conversation I’m doing a disservice to the person I’m talking to. I’m not giving them my undivided attention and they absolutely deserve it.
Take a second and think about your driving/cell phone habits. Should you give them up? I took a hard look at myself and made the decision to stop using it. If someone calls I let it go to voicemail or I just pull over to answer the call. I know a lot of people use the time to get work done and they don’t want to give that up; but how much is that time worth?
I’d love some comments about this topic. What do you think and what’s your opinion?
