P90X is made up of 12 different routines (each on a DVD) and every day is between 1 hour and 1.5 hours. There are upper body workouts which consist of push ups, pull ups, bicep and tricep work, shoulders and back. You need to buy a pull up bar which fits in your door way and a set of dumbbells. I’ve been using between 20-40 pound dumbbells. There is a plyometric workout which is jump training and is probably the hardest of the bunch (but one of my favorites.) A pretty intense 93 minute yoga workout which has really helped my flexibility. A lower body workout which is basically squatting and lunging. A 16 minute ab workout (Ab Ripper X…I hate it but I love it.) It’s tough but you definitely feel it in your entire core and not just your abs; there’s also a stretching routine, a core workout and a kickboxing cardio workout.
The thing I really enjoy about P90X is that I can do it at home. I don’t have to pay the money for a gym, spend the time going there, and deal with the hassle of not getting machines and people forgetting to wipe down the equipment. Some people love going to the gym…I’m not one of those people. The other thing I love is the built in motivation of following along to the DVD. One thing I’ve always struggled with when working out is pushing myself hard enough…meaning I never push myself hard enough. The trainer (Tony Horton) has a great attitude, he knows when to tell you to push it and seems to say just the right thing to keep you motivated. Of course you still have to “bring it.” I know you’re thinking that following along to a DVD is cheesy and it probably looks like it was shot in a basement and the trainer is some yoked up steroid freak. Not at all. Like I said the workouts are great and it’s obvious a lot of effort was put into making them.
They are intense, you do sweat and work hard, your arms and legs will burn, you will feel it in your whole body, you will get stronger, you will get into better shape, you will feel great. But I’ve learned the only way you’ll feel this way is if you truly dedicate yourself to it (like any workout routine) push hard everyday and push play every single day.
